The holiday season has officially begun, and that means our favorite TV channels, radio stations, inboxes and even mailboxes are full bursting full of advertisements prompting us to buy the latest gadgets, clothing or big screen TV. Black Friday has come and gone and with it, Cyber Monday, as well. This brings us to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, also becoming better known in recent years as Giving Tuesday.
Giving Tuesday originated as a day to encourage families, businesses and communities to give back and celebrate generosity. It also serves to remind us that the season is more about giving to others and less about discounts at the mall.
On this Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to give back to your community and the organizations that are part of it. While there are many worthy national organizations, one of the great things about supporting a local organization is that you can directly see your donor dollars at work. On any given day, you can walk through the doors at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society and see dogs and cats being taken care of, trained and ultimately, finding new homes. We have many wonderful local organizations in this area, each with a worthwhile mission and hardworking staff and volunteers dedicated to making a difference in the community.
This Giving Tuesday, we’re hoping to raise enough funds to supply our shelter with all the wet cat food needed to feed our cats and kittens in 2016. Each year, hundreds of cats, and especially kittens, arrive at LTBHS in need of a temporary home until they find one of their own. We provide them with veterinary care, a warm bed and of course, nutritious food. Kittens, in particular, require wet cat food to grow healthy and strong, and there’s no doubt that we go through it very quickly. We are hopeful that on this Giving Tuesday, we can raise $500 which will provide us with all of the canned cat food we need during the next year.
Each year, the number of animals we save continues to rise. We just celebrated our 700th adoption this week, and we are expecting to break adoption records once again this year. Being able to raise $500 to feed our cats and kittens in 2016 would make a phenomenal impact. Thank you to everyone who keeps us in their thoughts this time of year-we couldn’t continue to save lives without you!
